Monitors

You're having a baby...as exciting as this news is for most, some parents need to deal with other emotions and questions. Far more reaching than the common questions that usually go hand in hand with the preparations for having a baby, is the decision of whether or not to monitor the baby. This decision is pertinent to a family that experiences an infant death.

Monitoring can increase or decrease the parents' stress. The monitor can either be an inconvenience or a security. It can allow the parent restful sleep or it may alarm and disturb their sleep. Monitoring may be viewed as invasive or inviting. The monitor can be seen as altering infant attachment or it can be incorporated into the infant's sleeping routine.

Having survived the tragic death of an infant, families are not only dealing with the emotions surrounding this pregnancy and birth, but with the questions and emotions left unanswered. Therefore, it is our goal, as health care providers, that each family's individual needs and decisions be respected and supported.

It is our recommendation that with the preparations for your new baby, the decision to monitor be discussed before your baby arrives. Make a list of pros and cons of monitoring. Then schedule an appointment with your midwife, doctor or paediatrician, where you can discuss your decision on whether or not to monitor and for how long. This will help alleviate any additional stress of decision-making at the time of your baby's birth.

Hi-Sense Babysense II Respiratory Monitor

SIDS New Zealand uses the Hi-Sense Babysense II Respiratory Monitor.

Babysense II Respiratory Monitor

Babysense II includes two sensor panels, which fit safely under the mattress. No part of the device ever comes in direct contact with the baby. The sensors are connected to a small battery operated control unit which can be clipped to the side of the baby's cot or bassinet, or placed on a nearby flat surface.

Babysense II constantly responds to your baby's breathing movement. Each breath causes a green light to flash. If the baby stops breathing movements for more than 20 seconds or if the breath rate drops below 10 breaths per minute, a loud alarm is sounded.

The Graesby MR10 monitor

The Graesby MR10 Monitor

The MR10 is a single channel respiration monitor with a choice of a 10 or 20 second apneoa delay. To work, the Monitor requires a Respiration Sensor. The Sensor is attached to the baby's abdomen and is linked to the Monitor by a narrow tube.

A breathing signal is picked up by the soft, foam filled Sensor (Respiration Sensor) attached to the infant’s abdomen. During breathing, expansion of the abdominal wall causes a small amount of air to pass through the Sensor and tube to the Monitor. During breathing the Monitor will also make an audible click and give a simultaneous visual indication. If the selected alarm time (20sec.) is breached (i.e. if no breath is detected after 20sec.) an audiovisual alarm is triggered.

The Graesby are available for hire.
